Going Green – Cargo Trailers Part 1

May 01, 2019

Some food for thought: how many times do you use your car to go less than 2 kilometers? You might be surprised. If you're looking for an excuse to ride your bike, here it is.

Have you stopped to think about how many of your daily errands could be done with a bicycle? We live in a society where our first thought is to get in the car and drive to the bank, grocery store, bakery, hardware store, laundromat etc. In the UK 24% of car trips are less than 1 mile and 68% are less than 5 miles. North American cities are more spread out than in Europe, but in the US the pattern is the same; 10% of car trips are less than 1 mile and 50% are less than 5 miles. With the all those short trips, why do we still rely on the car when the bicycle is most cost effective and time efficient mode of transportation?

Statistics show that 40-50% of adults have access to a bicycle and most bicycle trips are for recreational purposes. Are you one of those individuals? Try using your bicycle for transport! Why not try changing 1 or 2 of your car trips per week to a bicycle trip? If you have no cargo to carry, all it requires is a mind shift; hop on the bike rather than into your car. If you have cargo there are many options available to help you with this. Do your currently have a child trailer? Bring your child(ren) with you on some errands. This can serve 2 purposes: 1) the trailer will have extra space for some of the cargo that you need to haul and 2) it models bicycle transport to your kids. It has been demonstrated that children who grow up using bicycle transportation are likely to continue this as adults. Think about how much better the world would be if this generation of children grew up to be bicyclists! If a children’s trailer is not an option, you can use a cargo trailer. Depending on your requirements we have various options available:

Cargo Buddy: A durable, top loading trailer. With a capacity of 100 lbs and a box measurement of 22” x 31” x 12”, the cargo buddy is the most versatile of trailers as it can carry groceries, backpacks, beach bags, or most items you encounter daily.

City Cargo: A collapsible cargo trailer with a cover. This trailer can support 100 lbs and has inside dimensions of 18” x 25” x 15”. It can carry most loads and is ideal for the individual who does not have storage space as it easily collapses and stores flat.

Heavy Duty Flatbed: Our largest cargo trailer with a carrying capacity of 125 lbs. The flatbed can hold large totes, crates or even a standard lawn mower. Perfect for transporting shared items or even for starting your own mobile business. This is a great idea for the entrepreneur in your household who wants to start their own grass cutting business in the neighbourhood.

Which of these cargo trailers will make your life easiest? Stay tuned for Cargo Trailers Part 2 and Part 3 for a review of trailers for boats, pets, landscaping and more!
